BALTIMORE, MD – June 16, 2026 — The Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture today announced a series of leadership transitions that honor extraordinary service while positioning the Museum for its next chapter of growth and impact. 

After eight years of dedicated leadership, W. Drew Hawkins has concluded his term as Chair of the Board of Directors. Throughout his tenure, Hawkins helped guide the Museum through periods of significant growth and transformation, providing visionary governance, strategic leadership, and steadfast advocacy in support of the Museum’s mission. 

“Drew Hawkins has been an exceptional leader and steadfast supporter of The Lewis Museum throughout his eight years of service as Board Chair,” said Terri Lee Freeman, President of The Lewis Museum. “I have been fortunate to work alongside Drew during a transformative period in the Museum’s history, and I am deeply grateful for his partnership, encouragement, and unwavering commitment to our mission. His visionary leadership, generosity of spirit, and belief in the importance of preserving and sharing Maryland’s African American history and culture have helped strengthen this institution and position it for continued success. It has been a privilege to serve alongside him.” 

During his service, Hawkins strengthened Board governance and accountability, expanded philanthropic partnerships, and provided steady leadership during pivotal moments in the Museum’s history. His commitment to institutional excellence and long-term sustainability helped position The Lewis Museum for continued growth and impact. 

In recognition of Hawkins’ extraordinary service and enduring contributions, the Board of Directors has adopted a formal resolution documenting his many accomplishments and lasting impact on the institution. A copy of this resolution will be preserved in the Museum’s permanent records. The Museum also dedicated the W. Drew Hawkins Reception Area and Terrace in his honor. This permanent recognition reflects Hawkins’ transformational leadership, unwavering dedication, and profound commitment to the Museum’s mission. Through this 

dedication, his legacy will remain an enduring part of the institution he helped shape for generations to come. 

The Museum is pleased to announce that Kim Mumby Green has been elected Chair of the Board of Directors. Green succeeds Hawkins and brings a distinguished record of executive leadership, governance expertise, and philanthropic engagement to the role. Having previously served as Secretary, Development Chair, and Vice Chair of the Board, Green possesses a deep understanding of the Museum’s mission, strategic priorities, and opportunities for future growth. 

A respected business executive and strategic advisor, Green has built a career leading complex organizations, strengthening governance practices, cultivating transformational philanthropic support, and developing strategic partnerships that advance mission-driven institutions. Her extensive experience in board leadership, fundraising, executive transition planning, and organizational sustainability uniquely positions her to guide the Museum through this important period of leadership transition and future growth.

The Museum also announces its newly elected officers:

Additionally, the Board of Directors announced that President Terri Lee Freeman will retire in December 2026, concluding a distinguished tenure of transformational leadership. 

Since joining The Lewis Museum in 2020, Freeman has led the institution through a period of significant growth and impact. Under her leadership, the Museum strengthened its role as Maryland’s premier institution dedicated to preserving and interpreting African American history and culture through innovative exhibitions, dynamic public programming, strategic partnerships, and expanded community engagement.
