Family History Conversation with Dr. John F. Leeke and Ananda Leeke

In celebration of International Underground Railroad Month this September, join Dr. John F. Leeke and his daughter, Ananda Leeke, as they share their family’s extraordinary story of freedom seekers. Through research on Ancestry.com for Dr. Leeke’s memoir, American Change Agent: A Life & Legacy of Seeking Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion, they traced their origins back to Hagerstown, Maryland, where Peter and Catherine Leek escaped to Amherstburg, Canada, alongside their 14 children.

This multigenerational discussion highlights John’s early work as a pioneer for diversity, equality, and inclusion long before DEI gained widespread recognition. Together with co-author Ananda Leeke, they explore progress, challenges, and the continuous push for equality. Their joint insights show how ancestral heritage and historical perspective inform modern activism, honoring personal legacy as an integral part of American history.

A book signing will occur after their family history conversation.  This program is connected to the exhibit: The Lines We Cross: 250 Years of Maryland Forging America.
