Lewis Museum’s latest exhibition\, The Lines We Cross: 250 Years of Maryland Forging America\, through a dynamic performance of movement\, music\, and dance interpretation by Dance Baltimore. Drawing inspiration from the artwork and musical artifacts displayed in the “Black Artistic Expressions Within Maryland Gallery”\, the ensemble will bring to life themes surrounding iconic pieces—such as jazz legend Billie Holiday’s piano alongside creations by Tom Miller\, Romare Bearden\, Elizabeth Catlett\, and Jacob Lawrence. Following the Exhibits Expressions dance performance\, guests are invited to self-tour the gallery and reflect upon these featured works. \nThis program is connected to the exhibit: The Lines We Cross: 250 Years of Maryland Forging America. \n

Leeke and his daughter\, Ananda Leeke\, as they share their family’s extraordinary story of freedom seekers. Through research on Ancestry.com for Dr. Leeke’s memoir\, American Change Agent: A Life & Legacy of Seeking Diversity\, Equality\, and Inclusion\, they traced their origins back to Hagerstown\, Maryland\, where Peter and Catherine Leek escaped to Amherstburg\, Canada\, alongside their 14 children. \nThis multigenerational discussion highlights John’s early work as a pioneer for diversity\, equality\, and inclusion long before DEI gained widespread recognition. Together with co-author Ananda Leeke\, they explore progress\, challenges\, and the continuous push for equality. DESCRIPTION:Thomas Jefferson\, Sally Hemings & Solving a 200-Year-Old Mystery \nFeaturing Richard Kurin \nSeptember 30 @ 6:30 pm – 8pm| Doors open at 6 pm \nJoin Smithsonian scholar Richard Kurin for the launch of his new book\, “History by a Hair: Thomas Jefferson\, Sally Hemings\, and Solving a 200-Year-Old Mystery.” In 2011\, staff at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History discovered a light red  hair inside the pages of Thomas Jefferson’s Bible. That hair sparked an unprecedented scientific investigation that could finally resolve the most enduring question surrounding his life: Did he father the children of Sally Hemings\, an African American enslaved woman? \nFor over two centuries\, the Jefferson–Hemings controversy has shaped American debates about race\, power\, slavery\, and the mythology of the Founding Fathers. In this riveting narrative—part scientific detective story\, part historical epic—Richard Kurin leads readers through the fifteen-year-long genomic investigation conducted with leading DNA scientists\, archaeologists\, genealogists\, forensic experts\, and Jefferson and Hemings’ descendants across the country. The result is the first conclusive\, scientifically validated answer to a question that has reverberated since the eighteenth century—an answer that settles the historical record\, deepens our understanding of Jefferson\, honors generations of family oral history\, and asks America to confront the full complexity of its origins. \nRichard Kurin is the Smithsonian Institution’s Distinguished Scholar and Ambassador-at-Large and previously served as Under Secretary overseeing all museums and scientific centers. DESCRIPTION:For over 250 years\, African Americans have crossed literal and symbolic lines to\nclaim their lives\, build vibrant communities\, and challenge the nation to live up to its\nhighest ideals. Join the Lewis Museum this fall for a day of film screenings exploring\nhow African Americans have used their voices\, determination and ingenuity to push\nboundaries and shape the social\, cultural\, and political landscape of America. A post\nfilm discussion with filmmakers will occur following most screenings. \nFeatures Films include:\n● 11 am – 12 pm | Harriet Tubman: Vision of Freedom (54 min) –\nConsidered one of the greatest freedom fighters in our nation’s history\,\nexplore the nuanced portrait of Harriet Tubman\, the “conductor” of the\nUnderground Railroad\, who repeatedly risked her own freedom and life to\nfree others from slavery.\n○ Note: October 2026 marks the 170th anniversary of the historic\n“Tilly Escape” in October 1856\, one of Harriet Tubman’s most\ningenious Underground Railroad rescue missions. Operating from\nCanada\, Tubman returned to Baltimore to rescue an enslaved\nwoman named Tilly at the request of Tilly’s fiancé. \n● 12:15 pm – 1:15 pm | In Search of Phillis Wheatley Peters (35 minutes) –\nDiscover the story that history left out. In Search of Phillis Wheatley Peters\nis a documentary driven by new research that uncovers a largely unknown\nchapter in the life of Phillis Wheatley Peters — America’s first Black\npublished poet — revealing the remarkable love story between Phillis and\nJohn Peters\, the free Black man she married in 1778.\n○ A post discussion with filmmaker Leslie Askews will follow this\nscreening. \n● 1:35 pm – 2:30 pm | Kindred Spirits: Artists Hilda Wilkinson Brown and\nLilian Thomas Burwell (26:48 min) – In the documentary “Kindred Spirits\,“\nproduced by filmmaker Cintia Cabib\, Lilian Thomas Burwell recounts the life\nstory of her aunt\, artist and educator Hilda Wilkinson Brown\, who influenced\nBurwell’s own career as a teacher and abstract expressionist artist. Their \nlives\, artwork and sources of inspiration are presented against the backdrop\nof a segregated society in which Black artists created their own venues to\npublish and exhibit their work.\n○ A post discussion with filmmaker Cintia Cabib will follow this\nscreening. \n● 2:45 pm – 4:40 pm |A Life in Art: Through the Eye of Dr. Leslie King\nHammond (80 minutes) – The life and work of Dr. Leslie King Hammond\, a\nrenowned art historian\, educator\, curator\, and artist\, reveal a side of the art\nworld rarely seen. Through studio visits and museum exhibitions\, Dr.\nHammond has dedicated her life to helping artists of color find their path to\nsuccess with humor\, ingenuity\, and the extraordinary creativity that she and\nher extended artistic family embody.\n○ A panel discussion with Dr. Leslie King- Hammond and film\nproducers Ben Baker-Lee and Rassaan Hammond and to follow.\nThis program is associated with The Lines We Cross: 250 Years of Maryland\nForging America.
