SUMMARY:Public Conversations | Liberated Mind: A Guide to Black Clarity with Dr. Timothy D. Goler
DESCRIPTION:What does liberation mean beyond physical freedom? For generations\, Black people have been taught to cope\, adapt\, survive. To silence themselves before speaking. But what if that weight was never theirs to begin with? \nJoin the Reginald F. Lewis Museum and Dr. Timothy D. Goler for a thought provoking conversation on his book\, Liberated Mind: A Guide to Black Clarity which explores how social systems shape Black consciousness through thoughts\, identities\, relationships and choices. \nDr. Goler will discuss these frameworks from his book and how individuals and communities can reclaim their agency within those systems. A moderated conversation will then follow with Dr. Goler and Robert T. Parker\, the Lewis Museum’s Chief Curator & Director of Interpretation\, Visitor Experiences and Education\, which will explore how Black history\, culture and art can be sources of mental liberation and collective empowerment for a people who have remained resilient through centuries of oppression. \nA Q&A along with a book signing will follow this discussion. \nTimothy D. Goler\, PhD\, is a sociologist and author of Liberated Mind. He writes about clarity\, identity\, culture\, and the disciplined unlearning needed to reclaim mental authority and build self-directed lives. \nThis program highlights the November observance of mental health awareness holidays to include National Stress Day and National Gratitude Month.

SUMMARY:Genealogy Program & Expo: "Looking For History In Family Trees"
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Baltimore Chapter of the Afro-American Historical & Genealogical Society\, the Reginald F. Lewis Museum invites visitors to explore the vital role of family history research within the African American community. Attendees can connect with local genealogists and view featured historical artifacts\, including freedom papers\, ancestral photographs\, records of church founders\, Civil War service records\, and stock certificates from a family-owned Northern Virginia telephone business. Additionally\, educator and historian Dr. Brian Morrison will highlight youth initiatives designed to inspire the next generation to uncover their lineage. \nThe event will also feature insightful discussions with historians Chris Haley (Maryland State Archives) and Dr. Martha Jones (Johns Hopkins University) as they examine their own family trees and historical legacies. Marking its 50th anniversary\, Chris Haley—nephew of Alex Haley—will reflect on the enduring impact of ROOTS: The Saga of an American Family. Dr. Jones will share perspectives from her new book\, The Trouble of Color: An American Family Memoir\, tracing her personal ancestral journey alongside the broader dynamics of race and color. \n“Artfully blending genealogy\, historical research and self-reflection\, the book is both a testament to the importance of preserving Black history and a compelling account of a single family’s trials and successes.”\n—Smithsonian \nEvent Schedule \n\n12 pm – 3:30 pm | Genealogy Expo\n12:30 pm – 1 pm | Genealogy Youth Programming with Dr. Brian Morrison\n1:30 pm – 2:45 pm | Our Family Legacies with Chris Haley and Dr. Martha Jones\n\nA book signing will follow.
