SUMMARY:Voices in Solidarity Festival
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the close of summer with Opera Baltimore on Sunday\, August 30th\, for our Voices in Solidarity Festival in partnership with the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture\, the Jewish Museum of Maryland\, and the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House & Museum. Through music\, history\, and conversation\, this festival celebrates the rich diversity\, traditions\, and stories embedded within and between Baltimore’s Black and Jewish communities. \nDuring the free daytime celebration\, enjoy pop-up performances\, connect with Black and Jewish owned businesses and community leaders from across Baltimore\, and take a walking tour of Jonestown. This portion of the festival will be hosted by the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House & Museum\, with walking tours connecting key historic sites between the Reginald F. Lewis Museum and Jewish Museum of Maryland. \nThe celebration will continue into the late afternoon and early evening at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum\, with a special reception and concert featuring baritone Daniel Rich and soprano Sara Duchovnay. The program will also include a special display of artifacts from the collections of both the Lewis Museum and the Jewish Museum\, exploring the cultural intersections of Baltimore’s Black and Jewish communities. \nThis event is part of Voices in Solidarity: Baltimore’s Black and Jewish Operatic History\, a place-based initiative highlighting the deeply intertwined histories of the city’s Black and Jewish communities through music\, conversation\, and education. Voices in Solidarity is conducted by Opera Baltimore in partnership with the Jewish Museum of Maryland and the Reginald F. SUMMARY:Maryland at 250: The Values That Shape Us presents “Unfiltered: Free Speech\, Creativity and Democracy”
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Maryland’s Four Centuries Project and the Maryland Center for History and Culture\, the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture presents a powerful conversation on freedom of speech\, one of the nation’s most essential and contested ideals. \nOn Thursday\, September 10\, 2026 at 7pm\, join acclaimed author and cultural commentator  D. Watkins  and Maryland State Delegate Marlon Amprey at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum for a dynamic\, unscripted conversation exploring the history\, meaning\, and contemporary impact of free expression. Moving from the foundational principles of the First Amendment to modern legal debates surrounding creative expression including the Protecting Admissibility of Creative Expression (PACE) Act\, introduced as HB 1346 by Maryland State Delegate Marlon Amprey\, this dialogue will challenge audiences to consider: What does freedom of speech really mean\, and who does it protect? \nServing as a key component of the Lewis Museum’s latest exhibition\, The Lines We Cross: 250 Years of Maryland Forging America\, this program investigates how Maryland’s African American community has historically challenged boundaries surrounding power\, race\, citizenship\, and belonging. Combined\, this exhibition and lecture series push us to contemplate: What lines have Marylanders crossed in pursuit of freedom and what lines remain before us? \nAt 250 years\, Maryland’s story is not complete. It is still being written by those willing to question\, to act\, and to carry forward the work of freedom. Join us for an evening of history\, insight\, and purpose and take part in shaping what comes next.
