"Queen of Katwe" Book Talk and Signing

Meet Phiona Mutesi and Robert Katende in person, the individuals behind the “astonishing” (New York Times Book Review) and “inspirational” (Shelf Awareness) true story of a young chess prodigy from the slums of Uganda and her visionary coach. The book is now also a major motion picture starring Lupita Nyong'o. One day while searching for food, 9-year old Phiona meets Robert Katende. Katende is a war refugee turned missionary with an improbable dream: to empower kids in the Katwe slum through chess—a game so foreign there is no word for it in their native language. Laying a chessboard in the dirt, Robert begins teaching the local children, with one child - Phiona - standing out. Clips of the film will be shown. Mutesi and Katende give a talk and book signing.
