Freedom's Poems and Freedom's Proclamation

In our​ annual Maryland Emancipation program Prof. M. Nzadi Keita of Ursinus University will share her new book of poetry Brief Evidence of Heaven: Poems from the ​L​ife of Anna Murray Douglass. Anna Murray was the wife of Frederick Douglass, and this collection of poetry imagines the life of Ms. Douglass through persona poems. "Thanks to M. Nzadi Keita’s research, splendid imagination and artful wordwifery, readers of these poems will know and remember Anna Murray Douglass," - Lauri Robertson-Lorant, author of The Man Who Lived Among The Cannibals: Poems in the voice of Herman Melville.

Dr. Keita will be joined by Dr. Karsonya Whitehead of Loyola University who will share her new book, The Emancipation Proclamation: Race Relations on the Eve of Reconstruction.
